Sprinkler Extinguishes Cooking Fire in East Side Apartment

A cooking fire was contained and extinguished by an automatic fire sprinkler over the weekend.
MFD responded to 958 Rise Lane for a report of a fire alarm. Upon arrival, Engine 8 found smoke coming from a third-floor window and an occupant assuring firefighters that there was no fire. Firefighters proceeded inside to investigate and noted water coming into the hallway from the affected apartment. Engine 8 entered and found the sprinkler head in operation with no fire present.
Firefighters shut down the water supply to the sprinkler system, silenced the fire alarm, ventilated smoke from the third floor of the building, and helped remove water from the unit.
The occupant reported they were cooking with oil when the oil “just took off" and set off the sprinkler. The occupant was not injured by the fire, and fire-related damage was kept to a minimum because of the automatic activation of the sprinkler.
