Community, Clarity, and Collaboration: A Conversation with the Independent Police Monitor

posted

Alder Badri Lankella will continue his series of virtual learning sessions on Wednesday, June 17, from 12 PM to 1 PM. He will be joined by Aeiramique Glass, the Interim Independent Police Monitor. During this session, Glass will provide a brief update on the office's initiatives and participate in a question-and-answer segment with residents.

Glass was appointed as the Interim Independent Police Monitor in November of 2025, following the resignation of the previous monitor. The mission of the Office of the Independent Police Monitor (OIPM) is to provide independent, transparent, and community-centered oversight of the Madison Police Department, ensuring accountability, equity, and trust in public safety. This office is an official, independent agency of the City of Madison that operates separately from the police department.

Community engagement begins with open conversations and access to information. I encourage District 7 residents and all community members to join us for this Lunch and Learn to better understand the role of the Independent Police Monitor and how their office serves our community.

One of Glass's first actions upon her appointment was to address a backlog of 18 cases. Since then, the office has been receiving one to two new cases each month. The goal of the OIPM is to maintain oversight that prioritizes community engagement and transparency in policing practices. Glass also works collaboratively with the Police Civilian Oversight Board to review and make recommendations regarding police discipline, use of force, and other policies and activities. To learn more about the OIPM, you can find the Annual Report 2025/2026 here.
