At 2:05 am, interconnected smoke detectors in a utility room alerted residents of a fire at 6701 and 6715 Park Edge Drive. The building houses two side-by-side four plexes; eight units total with a shared basement. When firefighters entered 6715 Park Edge, they noticed a slight smoke haze throughout the building. They searched the basement area and found a door that was hot to the touch. Crews forced the door open and extinguished the fire within 20 minutes. A fire door to the utility room helped confine the fire and minimize the spread of smoke throughout the 2-story apartment complex. All residents evacuated safely and were able to return to their apartments. Fire damage is estimated at $15,000. The cause is under investigation. Remember: • Install smoke detectors and keep them in working order. • Make an escape plan and practice it.
