Storm Clean Up Efforts Continue

Regular Brush Collection Slowed by Volume
The Streets Division is going to continue its extra efforts to pick up debris from this week’s wind storms. There are currently up to 30 crews working on brush collection each day and that effort will be maintained as long as necessary.
“The Streets Division has been working with crews from Forestry and Parks in an effort clear damage from the wind storms that hit our area on Monday and Tuesday,” Madison strategic initiatives coordinator George Dreckmann said. “We have been concentrating on those areas which were hit the hardest, but we have experienced downed trees and limbs in all areas of Madison.”
Extra crews are being assigned to areas with significant storm damage. Some crews are also following the City’s regular seasonal brush collection rotation. Starting Monday added staff will be assigned to regular brush collection as well as continued pickups in areas with significant amount of storm damage.
“Our regular brush collection rotation has been slowed significantly by this week’s storms,” Dreckmann said. “That will continue to be the case going forward due to the large volume of material that has to be removed. Because there is storm debris in all parts of the city we will be increasing our efforts on regular brush collection starting Monday.”
Residents are reminded to pile brush in an open area on the terrace away from trees, utility poles and other obstructions and place the material with cut ends facing in the same direction as traffic whenever possible. This will improve collection efficiency.
The Streets Division will continue to allow Madison residents to bring in multiple pick up and trailer loads of brush to its drop off locations. Residents how can haul their own brush are encouraged to do so, especially those who have only a small amount of material. Use of the drop off sites is a service for Madison residents who cut their own brush. Contractors may not use our drop off sites.
The City’s brush drop off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger RD and 4602 Sycamore AV. They are open seven days a week from 8:30 until 4:30. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings the sites are open until 8 p.m. Contractors may dispose of brush, for a fee at the Madison Brush Processing Site at 121 E. Olin AV. The Olin AV site is open M-F from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
“Almost 500 tons of brush was hauled into the City’s brush processing site in the last two days,” Dreckmann said. “We know that there is a lot more material still out there. We anticipate that it will take us three weeks to complete our cleanup efforts. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to everything picked up.”
