Incident Details

A Madison woman and her male passenger were able to safely get out of their 2008 Chrysler 300 before it was consumed by fire Sunday morning.

While driving down Northport Drive, the occupants heard some crackling coming from the trunk of the car. Soon there was smoke emanating from the back, and within a half-block’s drive there were flames coming from the vehicle.

The driver immediately pulled over, unbuckled her child from the back seat, and stepped away. It didn’t take much time for flames to consume the vehicle.

When Engine Company 10 arrived just two minutes after being dispatched, they saw black smoke coming from the area of the PDQ gas station. Firefighters sprayed the vehicle with foam and water and extinguished the fire within minutes.

A car seat left just outside the vehicle was melted down by the nearby flames. The vehicle’s interior was completely burned down to the metal springs of the seats and metal frame.

The owner tells firefighters she bought the car in May, and she just got it back after being repaired for engine problems. Evidence suggests the fire started in the trunk, but it’s unknown how it occurred.

The car was not insured. All three occupants were uninjured.
