Incident Details

Engine Company 9 were called to a single-family home on Chamberlain Ave. for an active natural gas leak.

The homeowner says she and her daughter were painting the kitchen and moved the gas stove away from the wall when a sudden burst of flames, approximately two feet high, erupted from the gas service connected to the stove. They began to smell natural gas and heard a hissing sound. The homeowner turned off electrical power at the breaker box before she and her daughter evacuated the home and called 911.

The two met firefighters outside. Engine 9’s crew could smell and hear the natural gas leak in the kitchen. They shut off the supply line valve in the basement to stop the leak and opened windows throughout the house. Firefighters advised the homeowner to keep the valve turned off until the service hose was repaired. She said she understood and thanked Engine 9 for their help.
