Incident Details

Approximately 15-17 gallons of gasoline spilled onto the concrete at a Citgo station when the pump failed to turn off automatically. The customer who was pumping gas was not attending to the pump at the time.

Engine Company 10 was called to the gas station, and their visit came as a surprise to its owner. Meanwhile, the customer had locked himself out of his vehicle.

Firefighters focused foremost on the fire hazard presented by the spilled gasoline, which spread across the property. Engine 10 applied the absorbent powder Oil Dry around the pump, the vehicle, and the way to the sidewalk.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified by the MFD Hazardous Incident Team of the excessive spill. Police officers were called to the scene at the request of the customer, who refused to pay for the excess gasoline.
