Incident Details

Nobody was injured when a pressure cooker exploded inside a northside residence.

A full structure fire response was dispatched to the 1500 block of Troy Drive. Alarms sounded and occupants evacuated as crews arrived on scene. Engine Company 10 and Medic 10 entered the apartment to investigate.

The occupant said he was using the pressure cooker, which was situated on the electric stove, when the lid blew off without warning. He said there was never any noise coming from the pressure release valve nor any other signs that something was amiss.

The pressure cooker lid damaged the ceiling in the kitchen, and the pressure cooker pot caused significant damage to the oven and also affected the kitchen cabinets. The pressure from the blast also broke out the glass of a patio door and displaced two doors in an interior hallway.

Firefighters checked the apartment above for damage, finding none. Electrical power to the stove was shut down. The occupants found other living arrangements for the evening.
