One Taken To Hospital, Displaced Following Fire At East Side Residence

One person is displaced following a fire in an east side apartment. Medic 8, Ladder Co. 8, and Engine Co. 8 responded to the 2500 block of Independence Lane following reports of alarms sounding and the smell of smoke in the common hallway. Firefighters entered the unit where alarms were sounding and found one occupant inside. There was significant smoke damage stemming from an apparent fire. Firefighters located a burned mattress but no active flames. They applied water to the mattress to confirm the fire could not rekindle. Paramedics transported the occupant to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
