Assembly bill 414 would hamstring local governments, Glenway golf course, 20 is plenty, events

Hello neighbors,

Last night, the Plan Commission unanimously approved the changes at West High, so the old monuments building will be coming down and construction will start on time (roughly summer 2022).

Tomorrow there will be a public hearing on Assembly bill 414, which would curtail the ability of state and local governments to teach the true history of our country, and how the impacts of that true history are felt in all of our lives today. Mayor Rhodes-Conway has provided important context on the impact this bill would have on local government. You may register your opinion on this bill, preferably before 10am on Wednesday August 11, by contacting your legislators.

Alder Evers has provided an excellent summary of the progress at Glenway golf course, describing the need for a few more trees to be removed.

The 20 is plenty campaign has officially launched, with 20 mph speed limits implemented and enforced in the the Tenney-Lapham and Theresa-Hammersley neighborhoods.

Madison Public Library hours will return to full service on September 7.

Madison’s engineering department has won awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies for Fire Station 14 and the Madison Municipal Building renovation.

Events and other fun stuff:

• This week is Madison Black Restaurant Week.
• Multicultural farmers markets at Penn Park are happening from 4pm-7pm on August 12, August 26, and September 9; and from 10am-3pm every Sunday until September 5.
• The MadLit festival is August 13, and events continue every other Friday through October 8.
• Sessions at McPike Park are on! Check out the lineup for this Thursday and Friday and September 11-12.
• There are still lots of opportunities to enjoy movies in the parks.
