Vilas Park Drive Goes to BPC, Office Hours

posted

Hi Everyone.

Vilas Park Drive Interim Solution

A proposal to restrict vehicular traffic on Vilas Park Drive will be presented to the Board of Park Commissioners tomorrow, Wednesday, May 12, at 6:30 pm. The proposal has multiple elements to enhance pedestrian safety, including a buffered pedestrian walkway and a temporary gravel path along a portion of the drive.

The proposal specifies two-way traffic on the drive from the east heading west to the shelter parking lot, allowing access to park amenities. Bicycles will share the road and signage will indicate this portion of the drive is a shared use road. Cars will not be allowed on the section of the drive from the historic bridge to the shelter parking lot.

Please note this is an interim solution intended to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety on Vilas Park Drive until the drive is reconstructed in adherence to the Vilas Park Master Plan recommendations.

You may review the proposal as it will be presented at the meeting by clicking here.

This proposal grew out of a working group comprised of Parks and Traffic Engineering staff, several neighborhood residents, and yours truly. This is meant to be a temporary solution until the master plan recommendation for Vilas Park Drive can be implemented. It is my belief this interim solution will substantially improve safety conditions on the drive, allowing enhanced enjoyment of the Lake Wingra shoreline in the car-free section.

I urge neighborhood residents to support the proposal at the Board of Park Commissioners meeting by registering in support of item 65344 at https://www.cityofmadison.com/city-hall/committees/board-of-park-commissioners/5-12-2021. You may also submit comments about item 65344 by emailing pacommission@cityofmadison.com.
