COVID-19 and the 50TH Anniversary of Earth Day
postedHi Everyone.
Happy Earth Day, on this day, the 50th Anniversary of its founding by then Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.
I met Senator Nelson one time, when we were both on a panel discussing Ecological Economics at a Conference in 1991 here in Madison.
(You can order a DVD of the proceedings from that conference which includes my presentation and that of Sen Nelson here.)
Today we find ourselves in an unusual moment, to say the least. Amidst all the suffering brought on by the global pandemic, it's undeniable Mother Earth is getting a bit of a breather. Pollution has temporarily receded, skies have cleared as cars stay parked in driveways and jumbo jets sit idle.
Today, the award-winning filmmaker and best-selling author, Michael Moore, released a new documentary called "Planet of the Humans."
One could look at the pandemic as a wake-up call, sounding a clarion call about the climate emergency we are facing.
The planet is in great need of healing. We all are.
During this time of isolation, we have the opportunity to explore all types of healing, -- personal, social, ecological.
May this be a springboard toward a deep and lasting healing of our planet.
Looking for something practical while you are stuck at home? Consider planting a rain garden and help the city reach its goal of 1000 rain gardens.
Today, Mayor Satya shared some very cogent insights about "Earth Day in the Time of Covid-19."
I encourage you to get outdoors today and commune with nature.
(Observe social distancing and wear a mask if you'll be in proximity with other humans.)
A meditative walk, listening and observing.
In closing, let us consider this Buddhist chant, a prayer for healing, for each of us and for our planet:
"May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness
May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering
May all beings never be parted from freedom's true joy
May all beings dwell in equanimity free from attachment and aversion."
We will get through this, all of us, together.
Be safe. Be well. Be kind.
