Budget, ECA/LENA Meetings, Immigration - D15 Update 11/10/19

Budget

This week the Common Council will take up final deliberations on the 2020 Capital and Operating budgets with the Public Hearing kicking things off beginning at 5:45p on Tuesday. Anyone that's interested can register to speak up to 5 minutes on the Capital Budget and 5 minutes on the Operating Budget.

Following public comment, the council may begin deliberation on the capital budget or may recess until Wednesday evening depending on the time. We have meetings scheduled for Wedesday and Thursday (as needed) to complete the work.

I am sponsoring several amendments and will share more detailed budget information about these and other items prior to Tuesday's meeting. If you'd like to share your thoughts or questions with me ahead of the meeting, please reach out via email of phone.

11:00 am - Defend DACA Madison: March for the Future of Dreamers: The future of DACA and DREAMERS rests with the Supreme Court, which will start hearings on Nov. 12. The Court will determine what happens to the nearly 8,000 DREAMERS in Wisconsin alone.

6:00 pm - Rise of the E-Cigarette and Juul: What's a Juul? How does nicotine impact the body? How does an e-cig work? Join TFCDC to learn about vaping, including current use trends, and the policies that impact Madison and the Dane County community. This presentation is intended for parents, educators, and adult community members.

7:00 pm - LENA Monthly Meeting: This month's presenter will be Kyle Adams, of Ruedebusch Development & Construction, providing updates on the Royster development project. Now that the library is nearing completion, what is next? This month we will also have the elections for the next LENA board of directors, a vote on some by-law changes and, other neighborhood related business. Lite refreshments and beverages will be available for this meeting.

6:00 pm - Chazen Science Café: Sustainable Plastics: Can plastic be "green?" Meet UW-Madison researchers whose groundbreaking work is bringing the "speculative future" of plastics to life. Learn about what plastic really is, where it comes from, and where we are going next to make, use, and reuse plastic as sustainably as possible. Then hear from a representative from the plastic industry about what this looks like on the ground. Join us for a Q&A with the panelists, food and drinks in the Chazen's new café, and a chance to tour Plastic Entanglements: Ecology, Aesthetics, Materials after the event.

12:00 pm - OM Village 5 Year Anniversary Celebration: From a protest movement, to a roving encampment, to a village. Five years ago, Occupy Madison launched our OM Tiny Homes Village on Madison's east side. Join us to celebrate community, dignity, and tiny ways to make our world more humane and sustainable. There will be live music, refreshments, tours of Tiny Homes, and discussions of OM Village's past, present and future.

4:00 pm - Winter Madison Night Market & Seasonal Lighting Celebration: Kick off the season with a special evening event - A Winter Night Market with a special downtown lighting ceremony!!! Madison's Central Business Improvement District presents the Seasonal Lighting Ceremony as the newest Downtown event. It will be the biggest and brightest party yet. At 6:08pm we'll flip the switch and shine! 

6:30 pm - A Raisin in the Sun: A Staged Reading: Come experience a special staged reading of Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" directed by Odyssey alumna Oroki Rice and produced by her Black Olive Community Theatre. The reading will also feature several Odyssey graduates, and all proceeds will benefit the UW Odyssey Project. There will be an audience talk back after the reading along with refreshments.
