Community Bonds Information & Council Briefing on August 20th Storm

This update includes information about last night's presentation to the Common Council from the Engineering Division and details on Community Bonds now available.

Last night's presentation focused on the August 20th storm, storm damage and what's next (what's next starts on page 37 of the slides). The presentation lasted about an hour. The mitigation process will take a while, but Engineering provided a good outline how the process will work.

If you experienced storm damage and haven't reported it to the City of Madison, please do so! Information provided is being used as part of Engineering's planning process.

Please share any document any property damage caused by the storm. This includes taking photos, videos, etc of debris lines on your homes to show how high the water got, noting water in basements and garages or other structural damage. This is especially important in areas where the street flooded and that is how water got into the house.

Engineering is also acutely interested in noting sanitary sewer backups, areas where vehicles have stalled, roadways that are/were impassable and of course large damage such as the damage that was caused by the overflow in drainage ditches that runs to ponds.

This information will help with planning and prioritizing needs across the city. Engineering has already planned future projects within the drainage basin, but identifying and gathering information early helps them immensely.

Here's a news release from the Mayor's Office about an opportunity to help the City of Madison by purchasing Community Bonds:

Mayor Soglin, City staff and other organizers will attend an informational meeting on City of Madison Community Bonds on Wednesday, October 3 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Warner Park Community Recreation Center. From October 3 through October 9, residents can purchase the bonds through Neighborly Securities, in $500 denominations, to support the future of the city.

The money invested will support the expansion of Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Funds will build dedicated education space and a bigger, more environmentally-friendly greenhouse.

Working alongside the capital campaign overseen by the Olbrich Botanical Society, this bond offering is another way to be a part of a facility that will serve all ages and demographics for years to come.
