The Madison Fire Department was dispatched to this incident at 12:41 PM. The call was upgraded to a pin response when witnesses reported drivers possibly trapped inside their vehicles.
Engine 10 arrived on scene at 12:46 pm to find two vehicles involved in the crash with significant damage to both vehicles. Fire/EMS crews removed one driver from their vehicle and immediately began life-saving efforts. This driver succumbed to their injuries, however, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office has been notified.
A second driver was pinned in their vehicle due to the extent of damage to the vehicle. Ladder 8, Engine 10, Medic 3, and Medic 8 worked together to quickly extricate this patient and transfer them to an ambulance. This driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
This incident remains under investigation by the Madison Police Department.
Southbound Packers Avenue is anticipated to remain closed down for an extended period of time due to the ongoing investigation.
