Assessed Value, New Construction, and Taxation - How it Works

City Assessor Michelle Drea provided a presentation at the Common Council meeting of May 21 answering many of the most common questions about how the assessment process works and how the assessed value of new construction determines how much taxes can rise.

Perhaps the most important note is that the State of Wisconsin, not Madison or any other municipality, county, or school district, controls the process. In fact, if the State finds that a local government entity is improperly managing the process, the State can take over the process.
