Crime Analysis Unit
This unit is comprised of three analysts and one supervisor. The unit is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting crime data to identify trends and patterns. Their work seeks to reduce crime by more effectively allocating resources, enhancing operational strategies, and aiding investigative services.
Records
The MPD Records Unit is made up of four sub-teams with various specialties responsible for the core administrative processes of the police department.
Court Services
The Court Services Unit is responsible for processing all citations for Municipal Court – ordinance, traffic and parking – as well as preparing all criminal traffic cases for Circuit Court. Additionally, Court Services handles the administrative functions associated with impounded vehicles and their releases, crash reports, and Restorative Justice referrals.
Information Management and Technology (IMAT)
The MPD technology section’s service is centered on the depth and breadth of hands-on support and management provided 24/7/365 to MPD’s extensive police centric systems, interfaces, and applications. This team’s responsibilities are to find solutions, triage issues, manage projects, implementation systems, contracts and purchasing, and utilize a wide-range institutional and technical knowledge of law enforcement systems/operations, to best help MPD accomplish its mission.
Police Report Typists and Case Processing
Police Report Typists transcribe and proof police reports to keep information flowing efficiently through our department, as well as assist both internal and external customers via phone or at our District windows. Our Case Processing team takes on coding our police reports based on Incident Based Reporting standards that are submitted to first the State and then the FBI.
Records Services Team
The Records Services Team is responsible for the processing, review and release of records that come into the department. Information Clerks are responsible for receiving, locating and preparing records requests of all kinds. Program Assistants, under the guidance of the Records Custodian, are responsible for reviewing and redacting the majority of documents, video, and photos released to the public. This team is also responsible for conducting background checks and providing fingerprinting services to the public
Training
Our Training Center has 3 professional members assigned to it - 1 program assistant, 1 training center coordinator, and 1 administrative clerk. The program assistant coordinates and facilitates the hiring process for all commissioned staff including scheduling all required process steps, backgrounding, and state requirements. The coordinator facilitates the planning and financial coordination of training programs hosted out of the training center, as well as facilities reservations and management. The administrative clerk maintains training records for the department as well as helps the training center run smoothly by making reservations, requesting work orders, and securing training facilities.
Property Room
Staff in this section are responsible for the accurate record keeping, safe storage, preservation, and ultimate disposal of over 180,000 items of evidentiary property. Property Clerks handle a wide variety of evidence to include media, documents, biological kits and swabs, clothing, electronics, weapons, narcotics and medications, currency, vehicles, and a wide variety of other property. The professional staff review cases with regard to statute of limitations and sentencing to determine case conclusion for property disposal approval. The Property Room also reviews and returns lost and found property, abandoned bikes, and arrestee property collected by Madison Police.
Forensic Services
This unit has 2 professional staff members assigned to it. The Forensic Video Analyst specializes in the ability to forensically recover, analyze, edit, clarify, and store video and digital evidence. The Forensic Services Unit Clerk specializes in duplicating and tracking of digital multimedia evidence.
Finance
This unit is comprised of 9 professional staff members who mission is to mission to compensate MPD employees accurately and on time, consistently follow City purchasing guidelines for authorized purchases, obtain grants, manage finances efficiently, provide human resources support, and exemplify superior customer service. Assigned to this unit is 1 finance manager, 1 grant program manager, 1 accountant, 1 accounting technician, 2 program assistants, 1 administrative assistant, 1 administrative clerk, and 1 human resources coordinator.
Chief's Office
Assigned to the Chief's Office/Executive Section is 1 police executive office supervisor, 1 program assistant, and 1 police report typist. The police executive office supervisor manages the executive section to ensure day-to-day operations run efficiently and effectively. This position supervises the program assistant and police report typist. This position works closely with the Chief and 3 Assistant Chiefs. The program assistant manages our Special Duty program where outside entities hire off-duty officers for their events to cover traffic and/or security-related requests. The police report typist manages all subpoena's received for our staff from the District Attorney's Office and other attorneys. This position also types reports that police officer dictate and provides referrals to DAIS reference domestic violence incidents/victims in our community.
