Free Mulch Changing Locations: Ending at Olin Site on July 11, 2025; Moving to Sycamore and South Point on July 14, 2025

posted

The City of Madison Streets and Urban Forestry Division will be changing where Madison residents can pick up free mulch.

Last Day for Free Mulch at Olin Avenue is July 11, 2025

The final day for residents to scoop free mulch from the current location at 121 E. Olin Avenue is Friday, July 11, 2025, while supplies last.

Free Mulch Moving to Sycamore and South Point Drop-off Sites on July 14, 2025

Starting on July 14, 2025, free mulch will be available at the Sycamore and South Point drop-off sites.

Access to the free mulch will be during drop-off site hours.

How much wood mulch can I take for free?

You are limited to 30 gallons. This means you can take six 5-gallon buckets from the free mulch areas.

Mulch supply is limited

Mulch is not guaranteed to be available when you arrive.

We will restock the free mulch supply as staff and mulch supply allows.

Why is the Streets Division moving the free mulch supply from Olin Avenue?

Starting on July 14, a construction project to improve the central drop-off site area will get underway at the Olin Avenue location.  The project is expected to last until December 2025.

To ensure the public’s safety during the project, we need to limit the amount of daytime traffic entering 121 E. Olin Avenue.  This means that the free mulch supply needs to be relocated.

Will larger volumes of wood mulch for purchase at Olin still be available?

Yes.

This change only affects the heavily used free mulch pile provided at Olin Avenue.

Purchasing mulch will remain available.

Will the free mulch move back to Olin once the construction project is completed?

A decision about where residents will be able to access small quantities of free mulch will be made at a later time.
