Madison Police Department and Community Partners Celebrate Completion of 2nd Annual Proximity Project
The Madison Police Department (MPD) proudly announces the successful completion of the 2nd Annual Proximity Project, a community-driven initiative designed to foster understanding, trust, and collaboration between officers and residents they serve.
This innovative program brings community members and officers together in one-on-one partnerships to strengthen relationships, foster dialogue, and inspire collaboration. Through this effort, MPD continues its commitment to building authentic connections with the community
“Every year, the Proximity Project reminds us why this work matters,” said MPD Officer Andre Lewis, who leads the initiative. “Building real relationships doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, commitment, and a willingness to listen. That’s why we must keep going and growing. The connections we’re making are planting seeds for long-lasting trust in our community.”
Over several weeks, officers and community members shared experiences, discussed challenges, and explored solutions to strengthen trust and understanding. This year’s project brought together a diverse group of community members, businesses, and organizations, including Alder Barbara Harrington-McKinney, Cargo Coffee, Ford’s Gym, Foster Funeral & Cremation Services, Henry Vilas Zoo, The Hmong Institute, Kilwins Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Over The Rainbow Project, and Sondel Family Veterinary Clinic.
Through the Proximity Project, participants partnered with MPD officers in meaningful exchanges, gaining insight into each other’s daily experiences and working toward a shared vision of a safer, more connected Madison.
“To be partnered with a newer officer who just happened to be Latina and female, was not what I expected but definitely welcomed,” said Dawn Adams, vice president and manager of Foster Funeral. “To hear her explain the whats, whys and hows for everything we did was really helpful. And, for her to maintain her focus on her job, she also made sure I was safe without missing a beat. I would ride with her again.
“Listening to (Officer) Milcah talk about her job and watching the comradery between the officers showed a commitment to serving the community to the best of her ability. Milcah really likes what she is doing,” added Adams, who experienced a four-hour police ride-along in the city.
Each conversation, each handshake, and each shared meal can bridge gaps, increase empathy, and foster better understanding between the police and the various communities they serve.
“Participating in the Proximity project presented a wonderful opportunity to showcase how treasured the Henry Vilas Zoo is to the community,” said Joseph Darcangelo, Deputy Zoo Director, for Henry Vilas Zoo. “Together, working in partnership with the Madison Police Department, we understand the importance of civic duty. Through the zoo’s focus of discovery and wonder, and the Madison Police Department’s commitment to safety, we can accomplish this together!”
