Meet Firefighter/EMT Lucas Kilian

Where are you stationed?
I am currently at Station 6 (Fish Hatchery Road) on the 'A' shift.
How has your previous education or work experience prepared you for this role?
My previous experience of owning a tree service has helped me greatly with my knowledge of working in hazardous conditions and being familiar with hand tools and power tools. It also has helped with working on ladders and with heights. Owning my own business, I had to engage with community members a lot, and that really helped with my people skills and engaging with different community members daily in the fire service.
What were you most surprised by when you started this job?
One thing I was surprised about is station life. This is the first job I have had where you truly live at work. You cook all your meals together, train together, clean together, basically everything you do is with your crew, and your station becomes like a second home. Your crew becomes like family, and you learn so much about them and become very close. This career is very special that way. That was something I was very surprised by and am very happy about.
What do you do when you're not working at MFD?
I still trim and cut trees when I am able to. I love the outdoors, and I like to go hunting and fishing, but right now my focus is on my family. I have a two-year-old daughter and just had a second daughter as well. She is about a month old, so my family is where I spend most of my free time, and I am loving every second of it.
Do you have a favorite book or movie that you would recommend?
My favorite movie right now would be Moana! My daughter loves it, and I know when she is having a bad day or in a bad mood I can put it on and snuggle with her. It instantly turns her frown right into a big ol' smile! She and I can basically quote the movie line for line right now!
