Firefighter/EMT Zander Hartung

Where are you stationed?
I am currently assigned to Station 7 (McKenna Blvd.) on the ‘C’ shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I was looking for a career centered around teamwork and helping others, and where no two days are the same. The fire service has been a perfect fit, and I feel fortunate to be a part of the MFD team and to have the opportunity to serve the Madison community.

How do you feel your previous education or work experience has prepared you for this role?
Before joining MFD, I managed manufacturing and engineering projects and helped develop a community health-focused business in Mozambique. Those experiences gave me the chance to work closely with people from all kinds of backgrounds, and clear communication and creative problem-solving were always at the center of how we got things done together. That approach has translated well to being a firefighter, where teamwork and communication are so important.

What has been your most rewarding part of your experience with the MFD so far?
The most rewarding part has been helping people in different ways and seeing how even small things can make a difference.

What do you do when you're not working at MFD?
My wife, our son, and I enjoy being outside together, riding bikes, hikes, and checking out events around the city. We also like to travel when we can to visit friends and family or explore new places.
