Where are you stationed?
I’m currently assigned to Fire Station 4 (Monroe Street) on the 'B' shift.

What are some unique qualities or characteristics about your territory, and how do they shape your service to the neighborhood?
Being right by campus and near downtown and the west side, Station 4’s territory is unique in that it covers a densely populated area where response times are often very quick. Additionally, the many events in the area, including football games, concerts, and other large gatherings, means we often respond to large crowds that include a mix of students, visitors, and residents.

All this shapes my preparedness in that I’m always trying to think ahead on the equipment I’ll need, the tasks I’ll need to perform, and what my role will most likely be during each call. This helps me keep one step ahead when our crew arrives quickly to each emergency.

What has been your most memorable day on the job so far?
My most memorable day on the job had to be one involving a duplex fire that broke out one summer night. We were the first engine on scene and heavy fire could be seen from miles away as my crew responded to the call. As we arrived, my partner and I advanced a first line to the outside of the property where the source of the flames was located. It took a great effort, but as other units arrived, we were able to get the fire under control and extinguish it fully. What made the call memorable wasn’t the fire itself but how all the training, communication, and teamwork that we practice every day made everything on scene go as smoothly as possible.

What is your earliest memory of a firefighter or paramedic, and how did it influence your desire to pursue this career?
One of my earliest experiences with firefighters/paramedics came when a close family member was involved in a car accident and had a medical emergency. The paramedics arrived within minutes, worked quickly, and spoke to my family in a very professional and compassionate way. I think seeing how they handled the situation made a strong impression on me, showed me how meaningful the work is, and eventually inspired me to want a career where I could do the same for others.

What's one thing that people might be surprised to know about your job?
One thing that people might be surprised to learn about our job is the variety of skills required to do it well. We’re not just firefighters and EMTs, but at times we’re often mechanics, building inspectors, lockout experts, hazardous materials specialists, social workers, along with many other roles. When most people think of firefighters, they picture flames and ladders, but what we really do is solve emergencies of all kinds.

What are some other careers you would have pursued if not this one?
I would most likely pursue teaching or coaching if I was not a firefighter. I think it would be a fun experience and another great way to serve the community by helping others learn, grow, and prepare for challenges in their lives.
