Incident Details

Firefighters put a fast stop to a fire that ignited inside a downtown apartment after some plastic containers were left on an active stovetop burner.

Engine 1 was called to the Aberdeen Apartments (437 W. Gorham Street) for a fire alarm investigation. Although the alarm panel directed firefighters to a fifth-floor electrical closet, they identified that the substantial amount of smoke in the hallway was coming from an apartment unit. The volume of smoke prompted Engine 1 to request a full structure fire response, summoning additional fire companies to the address.

Firefighters entered the fifth-floor apartment and found heavy smoke banked down. A small fire was found on the stovetop. The crew extinguished the fire with a water extinguisher and turned off the appliance.
