What we do:

  • provide accurate, secure, and efficient storage of police property and evidence
  • when an individual is arrested and they have property on them, officers collect the property for safekeeping and store it at our property room until the owner can retrieve the items

How do I retrieve my personal property from the property room?

  • Starting the week of October 18th, 2026, the Police Property Room will be open for public service Tuesdays & Thursdays 8am-4pm. Contact the Property Room at PDProperty@cityofmadison.com or 608-266-4955 with your request or to arrange a date and time to pick-up your property. Please, leave a clear message with your name, phone number, detailed inquiry, and case number and we will respond at our earliest availability
  • photo identification is required when picking up items

Impound Vehicle Information

  • impound vehicles need to be picked up from Schmidt's Towing located at 1621 Beld Street

Online Police Property Auction

  • The Madison Police Department has changed the auction format of abandoned and unclaimed property. Beginning October 1, 2009, MPD has contracted with an online police auction site that will post abandoned and unclaimed property from the City of Madison Police along with similar property from police agencies across the country.

Lost and Abandoned Property

  • Pursuant to the requirements of Madison General Ordinances Sec. 8.44, Lost & Abandoned Property, the Madison Police Department (MPD) will post a list of found items collected by officers and logged into our Records Management System.
  • The found items with no known owner will be held by MPD for 45 days and will be listed below.
  • If you believe that one of these items belongs to you, you must reasonably demonstrate a right to the property by contacting the Property Room at 211 S. Carroll St GR-4 or by phone at 608-266-4955. MPD will document who the found property was returned to.

Application to Obtain Bicycle Donations

Section 12.761(4) of the Madison General Ordinance allows for donation of bicycles to charitable non-profit organizations. When abandoned bicycles are not returned to the owner or sold, the City of Madison Police Department will donate abandoned bicycles to qualified organizations.

  • Bicycles shall be held by the Madison Police Department Property Section for 45 days before being considered for donation
  • To request bicycle donations, fill out the application which is reviewed by the Police Property Supervisor and the Captain of Specialized Services-Property. The Police Property Supervisor will notify all requesters of the approval/denial of their requests within 10 business days. If approved, the Police Bicycle Recovery Specialist will be in contact with the requester to schedule a pick-up date and time for the requested bicycles.
  • Requests should be made at least 30 days in advance from when the organization would like to receive the bicycles.
  • Donations shall be limited to charitable non-profit organizations. Such organizations must provide proof of their non-profit government status, (subsequent applications may reference these materials as "on file" with the Police Property Room) and assurances that the bicycles will be used as part of a charitable program sponsored by the organization.
  • Bicycles shall only be for the use of clients of requesting organizations and not for the employees or directors of such organizations. Bicycles may not be sold to raise revenue for any purpose. By accepting a bicycle under this program, the applicant grants permission to the City of Madison Police Department to audit its use of said bicycles in accordance with these guidelines.
  • Organizations wishing to request an ongoing supply of bicycles are required to submit a separate request on each occasion when a donation is desired. Bicycle donations are subject to availability, as determined by the Police Department. Organizations may receive no more than 20 bicycles at one time. Once all requests have been filled then an organization may receive additional bicycles.
  • Organizations receiving donated bicycles must sign a liability waiver and provide for the removal of the bicycles.
