Alder Harrington-McKinney’s Updates

Update on Jeffy Trail Extension (4/5/17)

April 5, 2017 9:55 AM

Dear Neighbors:

It is sometimes the case that misinformation and rumors on an Alder's position spread and "take on a life of its own."

I am increasingly surprised at the belief that I support the extension of Jeffy Trail. I supported a well vetted and comprehensive analysis of the proposed extension of the project. Indeed, in my first year as a member of the Board of Estimates (Finance Committee) I successfully moved to have the project put on hold until there was a citizen workgroup formed to conduct a comprehensive discussion on Jeffy Trail and alternative transportation options. Unfortunately, the organization of the workgroup took far longer than anticipated. As Alder, I asked a member of the Madison West Neighborhood Association to chair the workgroup. An Alder cannot do it all, and must draw on citizen involved leadership. That is why we have almost 100 city committees and commissions to spur citizen engagement in the city government process and I continue to encourage others to become involved.

The workgroup that was set in motion by my amendment has done its work. The workgroup has had an opportunity to analyze and evaluate various options, around the Jeffy Trail extension related to the transportation, traffic, emergency access and other pertinent issues of this growing community. The challenges of eliminating a bike trail and ruining an increasingly popular green space were also issues of concern. Contrary to misinformation, I have continued to carefully weigh the views of city staff and residents whether this extension is necessary for "neighborhood development" or safety.

I will continue to make every effort to ensure that the Jeffy Trail proposal does not come to fruition as currently planned and that other more reasonable solutions are sought. It is the responsibility of the Alder to ensure that a thorough and well designed process is followed so that the best outcome is recommended and presented to the Common Council for final approval.

I hope this provides a clear and unambiguous statement on this issue that I know is important to members of our community. I have also provided the update on the project from Heather Allen, Common Council Legislative Analyst (here).

Please feel free contact me if you would like to further discuss this matter or other city policies and services that may be of concern to you.
