New Faces in the Central District

May 31, 2017 9:11 AM

Hello All!

I wanted to update you on some personnel changes taking place in the Central District.  First we are welcoming our recruits as they go solo!  Even after 20 years I have distinct (and mostly fond!) memories of my first day working solo as a fully fledged MPD Officer.  We also have a mid-year sergeant change due to department wide openings (more information below). I am also very excited that come June 4th, Central District will be 'fully staffed' for the first time this year.

Due to staffing shortages and departmental needs, Central went the first half of 2017 down a member of our Community Policing Team (CPT); I am very pleased that our CPT will be back to full strength come 6/4, and even more pleased to see a former alumnus of CCPT, Chad Crose, return to the team! Our CPT is a jack of all trades unit that is routinely utilized for a myriad of assignments including events (Mifflin St), bar issues, community events (Coffee with a Cop), UW Football, handling calls for service, training, drug interdiction and much more.  Chad writes:  "I have been a proud member of the Madison Police Department since 2007.  In my 10 years as an MPD officer I have been a member of the Central Community Policing Team, worked in patrol in many different parts of the City of Madison, and spent 3 years working in the Dane County Narcotics Task Force.  I am a lifelong resident of the City of Madison, and am happy to again be working in the heart of the city".   It was my pleasure to work with Chad during his time with Task Force and I know he will be a great addition to our CPT and to the Central District team.

In 2016, Central was very fortunate to have PO Matt Baker as our Neighborhood Resource Officer (NRO).  When Matt was deservedly promoted to sergeant, the NRO position was left vacant.  The NRO position is an important 'free safety' position that can dedicate time and energy to addressing specific issues within the district as well as teaming up with our CPT, NPO's and others to more effectively solve problems.  PO Ken Brown was selected to be our new NRO and writes:  "I have been with the Madison Police Department for 5 years, and have spent 4 years working in the Central District which I have truly come to love and enjoy.  Prior to being hired by MPD I was employed as a Probation and Parole Agent with the WI Department of Corrections for 6 years.  I grew up in the Milwaukee area and attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.  In my free time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing Frisbee golf, camping, reading and listening to music.  I look forward to working with and serving the citizens of the Central District which in my opinion is the most vibrant and exciting district in the City".  Over the last several months I've seen Ken in action--his dedication, passion and diligence will serve him (and the whole district) well as NRO.

And, even better, Matt Baker returns to the Central District as a platoon sergeant on 3rd shift!

Finally, State St NPO Sosoka will have her position filled temporarily but ably by another returning CPD alumnus, PO Kraig Kalka.  From PO Kalka:  "I am police officer Kraig Kalka with the City of Madison Police Department. On June 4th I will assume the duties of the Acting State Street Neighborhood Police Officer. I have worked in the state street area as a patrol officer for several years. I am excited to have the opportunity to work on State Street as the Neighborhood Officer and I will strive to make a positive impact. The downtown area, specifically State Street, is one of the focal points of our city. I will work diligently to ensure it is a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment to live in, work in or just to visit".  Kraig comes highly recommended by his peers and I am fully confident he will 'hit the ground running' and immediately contribute to the district and help to lead our Top of State initiative as we enter the warmer (and busier) summer season.

I have a great team Central--a team that come June 4th only gets better!
