"New" South District Update for January 2018

February 5, 2018 1:14 PM

For many months now, we have shared monthly incident data from the South District with all of you.  We will continue this practice in 2018, but there have been some recent changes which require some additional explanation.  At the start of February, the Midtown District took shape (even while the station is still being built) and we recognized new district boundaries in the South District.  Several of our northern police sectors were renumbered and are now in the Midtown District (Sectors 301-305 are now in the Midtown District).  As a result of this, the South District is now geographically smaller and the data we share will look different.  Our smaller geographic size will change in due time however with the looming attachment of the Town of Madison.

Here is a link to a detailed map of our new district boundaries that are in effect now (South District boundaries are in yellow):  /police/blog/documents/precincts_2018.pdf

During January, the MPD addressed 2,186 incidents in the South District (this still includes the previously mentioned sectors which are now in the Midtown District; these sectors will not be included next month). That is an average of almost 70 incidents per day (a minor increase from December).

As a reminder, most incidents are calls for service from citizens.  These calls could be for reports of crime, but could also be for non-criminal occurrences like traffic crashes, civil disputes or parking complaints.  Activities that officers initiate on their own will also account for incidents in these totals - for example, activities like a traffic stop for speeding or some time spent on foot patrol.  Incident titles are created when the call is originated or first received by a dispatcher.  This original title may not always reflect what actually occurred and what is ultimately investigated by the MPD.
