West District Summer Musings...

July 21, 2022 1:31 PM

Hello everyone!

It has been a bit since I've sent out a blog post. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer thus far!

I first want to draw your attention to some events coming up in the West Sistrict. These are three great opportunities to venture out into community spaces!

On 7/23/22 at Good Shepard Lutheran Church (5701 Raymond Rd) from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm comes the second session of Love Your Neighborhood: Reinvigorating Southwest Madison. Register now at www.southwestmadison.org

Next up is a Wild Rumpus at Meadowood on 7/27/22 from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. Here is the link: https://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/calendar/a-wild-rumpus-at-meadowood-park

Anything that mentions to bring messy clothes and a water bottle sounds like a classic summertime event!

Also check out a Parks Alive! event at Elver Park on 8/1/22 from 4:30 – 8:30 pm. They will be showing the movie Chicken Run and the MSCR Art Cart will be there!

That movie never gets old!

In other news...

Let's see, in other news, our summer strategic plan continues. As you no doubt have heard through at least one source, our focus this summer is on a reduction in shots fired calls and a reduction in stolen vehicles city wide. Our officers are also attempting to monitor traffic in between calls for service and while there has been an uptick in stolen autos in the west district, the location of these incidents are sporadic enough that we have not honed in on any particular hot spots to warn residents about at this point.

Please continue to keep your garage doors down when you can and keep your keys separated from your vehicles. You have likely heard about the trend in stealing vehicles of the Kia and Hyundai variety by now as well which are often taken when they are locked and without key access. Sometimes, we can do everything right and bad things still happen beyond our control.

I do, however, want to highlight an incident from last week that demonstrates the power of community/police teamwork during one of those instances where someone did everything right and was still targeted.

On 7/16/22 a citizen called 911 to report that 4 individuals were attempting to steal a vehicle near West Towne Mall. They just called in an observation and acted as a good witness. Officers arrived on scene quickly and were able to take all 4 into custody. While police cannot possibly be everywhere all the time, everyday citizens out and about living their lives are! This call was resolved through teamwork between members of your community and your west district officers. Let's keep working together. If you see suspicious behavior, please let us know.

I will be back in touch with some updated statistics next week. In the meantime, be safe and well.
