2024 Engineering Prescribed Burns

posted

The City of Madison Engineering Division staff, in partnership with the Madison Fire Department, will be conducting prescribed burns on areas of existing native vegetation. Prescribed burns are an important management tool for Wisconsin’s native plant communities.

The timeline for these burns to occur will be between Monday, March 11, 2024, and Friday, May 31, 2024. The correct conditions for prescribed burns can be difficult to predict, so it is not usually possible to provide exact dates. Engineering will send me an email on the morning of the burn(s), and I will do my best to post a blog if my schedule allows. Burns may only occur if correct weather conditions do occur.

Prescribed burn(s) that will occur in District 1 include:

  • Shady Birch @ Sugar Maple Pond, 10217 Shady Birch Tr
  • Sugar Maple Ln Pond, 1050 Cherry Blossom Dr
  • LBMC Midtown-Woods Retention Pond, AKA Woods Rd Pond, 1951 Woods Rd
  • Ashworth Dr Pond, 2009 Hawks Ridge Dr
  • Junction Loop Pond, S Junction Rd @ Mineral Point Rd

The prescribed burn Project Manager will be mailing postcards to residents to notify them about the prescribed burn in their neighborhood.

All burns are being conducted by certified staff or contractors with approval by the Madison Fire Department. The burns will only occur under specific weather conditions to manage smoke and minimize impacts to neighbors. In addition, the burn professionals will install appropriate road signage on the day of the burn.
