Crossing Guards

The City of Madison's Elementary School Crossing Protection Criteria falls under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Commission. Based on the policy criteria, a budget is defined.

Before evaluating a location for an adult school crossing guard, three basic criteria must be met:

1. The initial request for a crossing guard must be submitted by the school principal to Traffic Engineering or the School Traffic Safety Team.
2. The request must be for a public elementary school located within the City of Madison.
3. A minimum of 20 elementary school students must be observed crossing at the location during a single school arrival or dismissal period

The Mayor and City Council approve the overall budget, which includes funds for crossing guards. The Transportation Commission ensures that the Crossing Protection Criteria are met and manages the allocated funds. The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division (TE) conducts regular reviews of crossing guard locations to ensure compliance with the City's adopted policy. TE is recommending that the Transportation Commission discontinue the following crossing guard locations:
