A draft of the West Area Plan is now available for public review!  Please review and comment on the draft west area plan located at plans.cityofmadison.com/westareaplandraft  by March 20th at 4pm CST, email me directly at district11@cityofmadison.com, or provide feedback at one of the three scheduled public meetings host by Planning Division staff.

All three public meetings will cover identical content. Please be aware that the virtual public meetings (conducted via Zoom) require registration. You can register to attend either or both of the Zoom meetings by clicking on the respective dates: March 4th, at 6:00 p.m. or March 5th, 12:00 p.m (Noon). Registration is mandatory for participation in these virtual Zoom meetings, and both virtual sessions will be recorded and made available for you to review at your convenience.

In additional to the virtual meetings you are encouraged to attend the only in-person meeting on March 12, 6:00 p.m. at Vel Phillips Memorial High School, 201 S. Gammon Rd., Wisconsin Neighborhood Center (no registration is required).

A full .PDF of draft plan with complete text and maps, including chapter introductions and appendices, is available here for you to download.  Note that a fully formatted final draft of the West Area plan, including photos and additional background information graphics, will be created for board/committee/commission/Council review after March 20th, when Planning Division staff has reviewed all public comments

As the draft West Area Plan nears completion, the Planning Division is also notifying owners of properties recommended for proactive rezoning in the draft West Area Plan. An additional special virtual meeting focused on proactive rezoning will be held on March 18, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. Registration is required. This special virtual meeting will cover similar information that was discussed at the January 31, 2024 public meeting pertaining to the Highlands Community Association.

Proactive rezoning is potential City-led rezoning of property consistent with plan recommendations. See (areas "A" through "E" on page six within the linked document ) The "draft" West Area Plan, if adopted, only recommends proactive rezoning—it does not rezone properties. Future public hearings would be held by the Plan Commission and Common Council before any properties are rezoned. Importantly, a rezoning would not impact the ability of current land uses to continue.
