Welcome to the District 14 Blog and Upcoming Events

posted

Hello everyone! This is Alder Noah Lieberman and I'd like to welcome you to the district 14 blog. I'll be using this space to share updates on what is happening in the common council and city-at-large, as well as on issues important to the South side of town. For those of you I haven't had the chance to meet, I moved to South Madison in 2020 and live in the Badger Rock neighborhood. My wife Leigha and I have a toddler named Quinn, who you will probably see with me around the district since I am currently a stay-at-home dad. This is my first term as an alder, and I serve on the following committees:

  • Housing Strategy
  • Board of Park Commissioners
  • Greater Madison Metropolitan Planning Organization
  • Sustainable Madison
  • Capital Area Regional Planning Commission
  • Common Council Executive Committee

If you have any questions or comments for me about issues coming before the council or any of these committees, please feel free to reach out to my email at district14@cityofmadison.com.

District 14 Updates

  • I was able to attend the ribbon cutting for the Center of Black Excellence and Culture. It was truly remarkable to be there with so many leaders and visionaries from Madison's Black community. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it - it's truly something to behold and a great addition to our district.
  • The city is working with the state Department of Transportation to transfer control of S Park St from the beltline to the West Washington to Madison. Currently, Madison has to seek approval from the state to make changes to the layout of Park St, which delays and limits our ability to make improvements to the road. Improving safety on Park St for everyone - through immediate measures and long-term design - is a top priority for me, so I am hopeful that this agreement will go through quickly.
  • The South District of the Madison Police Department held a town hall at The Hub last month and shared their progress on enforcing traffic laws on Park St. Capt. Harrison Zanders says his district issued over 400 citations on Park St over 4 weeks, mostly for speeding. While I don't think increased enforcement is the right long-term answer for making Park St safer, I am grateful for the work MPD has been doing to stop speeders in our district.

Is there an issue or topic you want an update on in a future post? Let me know!

Upcoming Events

Here are some events I am looking forward to in our district. If you have an event you'd like the community to know about, let me know!

Thanks for reading!

Fun D14 Fact: Did you know our district has one of Madison's four splash parks? Cypress Splash Park opens Memorial Day weekend and is a great way for kids to beat the heat!
