Snow Plowing Update

January 23, 2022 8:01 PM

snow emergency

January 23, 7:46 pm

The ongoing Snow Emergency and another snowstorm will keep the Streets Division plows out through the night and into the morning. Fresh snow and cold temperatures will make for a slow and snowy Monday morning commute on all streets through Madison.

The City of Madison declared a Snow Emergency earlier today. Everyone parking on the street tonight must follow alternate side parking restrictions. If you unaware of where you should park, check the City of Madison's winter website for help: www.cityofmadison.com/winter.

While the initial plowing of the city has been completed, more cleanup is necessary to get all of the snow pushed back to the curb. From 1:00am to 7:00am, crews will be plowing the areas not blocked by parked cars. Failure to follow alternate side parking rules can result in your vehicle being ticketed and towed.

Also tonight, a second snowstorm will hit Madison. The storm is expected to arrive shortly after midnight and last through the morning commute.

Additional staff will be on duty to maintain the main thoroughfares in response to this fresh snow event, and they will remain on the routes throughout the duration of the storm.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid to low teens during the snowstorm. This is too cold for salt to be effective at the rate applied by the Streets Division. Crews working on the main thoroughfares will be applying sand as needed to help with traction.

With the timing and temperatures of the new snowstorm, you will need to make good choices and plan for a slow and snowy morning commute. Give yourself extra time to arrive at your destinations. This way you can be cautious, alert, and patient as you make your way through Madison.

Frigid temperatures too cold for salt are expected to linger until later this week, so the snow-covered main thoroughfares should be expected for the next few days.  Residential streets will also be snow-covered, but this is the normal post-plowing road conditions as these roadways are not salted.

Streets Division staff will continue to monitor the roads and the weather. Additional updated will be provided as operations adjust.

Please Note: During a Snow Emergency, people who park in the Snow Emergency Zone must follow alternate side parking rules for the next two nights. A Snow Emergency may be extended past the 48 hours if needed. We will always declare a Snow Emergency before 9:00 pm on the night it will take effect. During a Snow Emergency, Alternate Side Parking fines are $60, plus a $65 towing fee.
