Last Week

Route 38 restored

The Transportation Commission voted to restore Route 38 service as recommended by Metro staff at last week's meeting. Thank you to everyone that wrote in in support of this change. All of the stop changes that were proposed were also approved by the commission. Both the route and stop changes will occur later this year and information will be available on their website in the future.

Dempsey/Davies/Maher timeline updated

As I shared earlier, the Dempsey/Davies/Maher project that was originally planned for this year was postponed until 2022. Staff is working on additional alternatives for Maher and hopes to have these available late summer/early fall and will schedule additional public input meetings then to review and to get feedback. You can find all the up-to-date information on the project page here

Violence prevention

The sharp increase in gun violence this year brought a renewed focus to identifying solutions to reduce violence of all kinds in our community. I spoke about the need to address this from a root cause perspective in a previous blog post here

While the Department of Transportation has been charged with eliminating preventable injuries and deaths on our city streets through the Vision Zero initiative, Public Health Madison Dane County's Violence Prevention Unit is lead in the efforts to reduce the violence that results from the intentional use of force against others.

The work to date has resulted in the recent release of A Roadmap To Reducing Violence. This roadmap is the beginning of what I hope will become a serious and significant commitment by the city to address violence in our community. You can read a press release about the roadmap and goals here.

This Week

Lake Edge NA March meeting

Lake Edge residents are invited to attend this month's meeting that will include speakers from a group supporting Madison Roots (Edit: a proposal for a new bar at the current/former Jo Beck's as well as a coffee stand in the parking lot of the Red Lion will be at April's meeting). You can find more details and a link to register here.

Forum on restructuring Madison city government

On this spring's ballot, voters will be asked for their opinion on four referendum questions related to the structure of city government. These questions come from recommendations of the Task Force on the Structure of City Government that met for two years and put forward forty-four recommendations for change. On Tuesday at 7 pm, the chair of this task force, Eileen Harrington, will provide a presentation on these recommendations. You can find a link to the meeting here, a link to more information about the task force here, and more information about the questions that will be on the spring ballot here.

Independent Police Monitor hiring process

The Police Civilian Oversight Board will be discussing the process for hiring an Independent Police Monitor at its meeting on Thursday. Find meeting details online here.
