Messenger needed
Four years ago, this passage helped move me to run to serve as District 15 alder. It's been a great experience and I've grown a lot and feel proud of my contributions to date. As the candidacy period for the 2023-25 alder term approaches, I wanted to share that I will not be seeking reelection. There are a number of important initiatives that I still hope to move forward before my current term ends in April and I'm excited by the prospect of a new messenger that carries the right message of justice and love. I'm happy to talk with anyone considering a run about my experience and what you might expect. You can find more information on becoming a candidate here.
Budget outcome
The Common Council passed the 2023 Capital and Operating Budgets last week after two long nights of discussion and debate. You can watch recordings of both nights here. A version of the amendment that I cosponsored to increase alder pay passed on a 12-8 vote. The original proposal was to increase alder pay to match the average City of Madison employee wage (currently $34.81/hour) for 20.81 hours/week of work. The amount that was included in the 2023 budget was based on a rate of pay of $19.04/hour, equal to the lowest wage of any permanent City of Madison worker. In order to take effect, the council is also required to update city ordinance which is on Tuesday's Common Council agenda.
