Atwood Project Update 10/10/2023

posted

10/10/2023 Update:
This week, the project team is planning to pour curbs and gutters, perform electrical work and install streetlights along Atwood Avenue. There will be some temporary sidewalk closures in these areas while milling work takes place. Please watch for signs indicating the closures and use alternate routes to avoid the affected areas.

Crews are also working on park restoration efforts this week, as well as continuing work on the pedestrian bridge at Starkweather Creek.

The multi-use path on the lake side of Atwood Avenue will remain closed between Walter Street and Oakridge Avenue/Sugar Avenue until the bridge work is complete. Pedestrians traveling near the creek may cross Atwood Avenue at Walter Street to access open routes. There is also a crossing point at Olbrich Botanical Gardens for pedestrians wishing to access the lake near Welch Avenue.

Metro Transit has moved its inbound temporary bus stops to their permanent locations in the area. View more information on Metro Transit's website.

The following traffic patterns are currently in place:

  • Traffic is restricted to a single inbound lane (toward downtown) on the lake side of Atwood Avenue from Cottage Grove Road to Walter Street.
  • Access to Dennett Drive, Margaret Street and Olbrich Avenue will remain closed as crews continue to build new infrastructure at those intersections. Walter Street should continue to be used as the main local access point.
  • Traffic traveling inbound/toward downtown past Walter Street may continue to travel on Atwood Avenue through Fair Oaks Avenue using the designated lane.
  • Local traffic traveling outbound/away from downtown may access all businesses and side streets except Oakridge Avenue between Fair Oaks Avenue and Walter Street. There is no outbound lane past Walter Street.
  • Through traffic traveling outbound/away from downtown should continue to use the existing detour, which directs traffic from Atwood Avenue to Fair Oaks Avenue to Milwaukee Street to US 51/Stoughton Road to Cottage Grove Road.

View a map of the traffic patterns and pedestrian access routes beginning Sept. 1.

The Lake Loop bike detour also remains in place. View the Detour Lake Loop Map

Crews have completed all concrete and asphalt recycling operations. There will be no more material recycling at the Garver site for the duration of the project.

MGE continues to perform work during the street construction project requiring sidewalk and lane closures to move their facilities out of the way of the new street layout. WisDOT is the project lead for construction.

Please email your comments and questions to ENComments@cityofmadison.com and we will work with the WisDOT construction engineer to provide answers.
