Hi everyone!  We're in store for our first heavy snowfall this winter. If you haven't stocked up on supplies, it's crowded out there so take some extra time and bring an extra bag of patience. 

Like always, look out for your neighbors. I'll do my best to post any new information that I can as it comes along! 

UPDATE: Plan Commission will be cancelled for tonight and tomorrow's Common Council Meeting will be completely virtual.

Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

Note: This is not a complete list of meetings for this upcoming week. All meetings and their details can be found here.

  • Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 9, in hybrid format at 6:30 p.m. Agenda items include celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, establishing voting locations for the 2024 spring elections, financing the Phase 1 redevelopment of the Triangle public housing site, and updating salaries for alders.
  • Plan Commission: The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, January 8, in virtual format at 5:30 p.m. Agenda items include development related requests in Districts 2, 4, and 12.
  • Board of Public Works: The Board of Public Works meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 10, in virtual format at 4:30 p.m. Agenda items include authorization for additional design engineering services for John Nolen Drive, approving the City of Madison standard specifications for Public Works construction, and approving the plans, specifications, and schedule of assessments for the Lowell Street Assessment District, the East Wilson Street and East Doty Street Assessment District, and the Lake Mendota Drive Assessment District.
  • Board of Park Commissioners: The Board of Park Commissioners meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 10, at the Parks Division Lakeside Offices at 330 East Lakeside Street at 6:30 p.m. Agenda items include the acquisition of property in Districts 12 and 13, an informational presentation regarding current land management and sustainability initiatives, and expanding the sailboat storage area at Warner Park.

  • Pick Up Native Wisconsin Seeds: Native Wisconsin Seeds are now available in six - yes SIX - of our libraries! This year, we've added another new library location to the Seed Library(link is external) - Hawthorne Library! You can now pick up seed packets at Sequoya, Meadowridge, Pinney, Goodman South Madison, Lakeview and Hawthorne Libraries - no library card needed. Why Native seeds now? Native Wisconsin plant seeds are best sown in the fall and left to overwinter.
  • 2024 Neighborhood Grant Program: Have you and your neighbors been thinking about making community improvements or strengthening your neighborhood group? The Planning Division will once again offer funding through the Neighborhood Grant Program for Leadership and Capacity Building and Community Enhancement projects. The application deadline is February 12, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. In late December, we will post updated grant materials on our webpage for 2024. In the interim, you can refer to last year’s  guidelines for assistance. Once you are ready to start an application, please contact the Planning Division at  Neighborhoods@cityofmadison.com, and share project ideas with your alderperson. Events

  • Warner Family Fun Night, Friday, January 12: Join us at WPCRC for Warner Family Fun Night! Families can create art projects, play in the game room or the gym, watch a movie or win some prizes playing bingo!
  • Groove & Glide, Friday, January 12: Make the most of winter at a Groove and Glide event! Experience the fun and beauty of ice skating under the lights with fun music and games.  All ages and experience levels are welcome. Grab your friends, a date, or the whole family, and come have some fun on the ice.
  • Bird & Nature Adventures at Owen Conservation Park, Saturday, January 13: Explore Owen Conservation Park on gentle trails through historic oak openings on a hillside with an Ice Age kettle and along restored prairies with beautiful vistas on this high point overlooking the west side of Madison. Co-sponsored by Madison Parks, Badgerland Bird Alliance, Madison Audubon Society,  and the Friends of Owen Conservation Park . Free, family-friendly guided nature walks at Owen Conservation Park are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month, year-round 2:30-4pm. No registration is required. No pets are allowed.
  • Candlelit Snowshoe Hike, Saturday, January 13: In partnership, Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Monona Parks & Recreation, and Madison Parks present this wonderful snowshoe hiking event! Hundreds of softly glowing lights illuminate the trails through Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Edna Taylor Conservation, and Woodland Park. Snowshoe or hike and enjoy a roaring bonfire outside. All ages are welcome.
  • Bird & Nature Adventures at Turville Point Conservation Park, Sunday, January 14: Follow rolling hiking paths through the Turville Point Conservation Park woodlands and prairie with beautiful vistas of Lake Monona and Monona Bay. Walks at Turville Point held on the 2nd Sunday every month are co-sponsored by Madison Bird City FUN partners, Madison Parks, Badgerland Bird Alliance, Friends of Olin Turville, and Madison Audubon Society. Meet at the Turville Point parking lot, entrance at the E. Olin Ave. stoplight from John Nolen Drive at the railroad tracks, south of Olin Park (not at the boat launch). No registration is required. No pets are allowed.
