Atwood High Speed Pursuit

posted

Hi everyone, I heard some chatter about a high speed pursuit on Atwood. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Here is what the Police Department shared with me.

This occurred on Friday, around 1:30PM. Case number 26-312563

Dane County pursued a stolen vehicle westbound on the beltline.  State Patrol located the vehicle via aircraft and tracked it off of the beltline at John Nolen Drive.  The vehicle's route suggested that it was going to traverse the isthmus and possibly return heading south on Atwood Ave.

An MPD Officer set up on Atwood Ave near Olbrich Park with spike strips (designed to gradually deflate tires).  When the vehicle approached from the north, the MPD Officer deployed the spike strips and successfully deflated one of the suspect vehicle's tires.  The vehicle continued to flee southbound to Buckeye Rd, at which point the driver attempted to flee on foot and was apprehended by Dane County Deputies.

Only the one MPD Officer was involved by deploying the spike strip and then following the pursuit to assist with his K9 at the end. "

We know that High Speed Pursuits are dangerous and I'm so grateful that this didn't end differently. Thank you to to MPD for participating to end the pursuit as quickly as possible.

I will continue to advocate against High Speed Pursuits through our district and our neighborhoods.
