Data Center Input Opportunities

posted

Hi everyone, data centers are an increasing concern for our neighbors here in Madison and Dane County. As the temporary Moratorium comes to a close, we're asking for you input to see how you would like us to address new data centers going forward.

Here is a little information about Types of Data Centers:

Small Data Center – A data center that is less than 10,000 square feet contained within a single building.
• Examples: A tenant in a building that leases space on their servers for off-site customers.
• Primary land use concern: Minimize placement of data centers within buildings where active uses are more appropriate.

Medium Data Center – A data center that is 10,000 to 50,000 sq. ft. contained within a single building.
• Example: Standalone building occupied by a business that provides server space for multiple off-site.
• Primary land use concerns: An abundance of these data centers displacing land/buildings that are more suitable to other forms of employment/commercial uses, some potential for noise.

Large Data Center - A data center that is 50,000 sq. ft. to 100,000 sq. ft. contained within a single building.
• Example: Standalone building provides server space for one or multiple off-site customers. They are more likely to support AI functionality. Also referred to as “edge data centers".
• Primary land use concerns: An abundance of these data centers displacing land/buildings that are more suitable to other forms of employment/commercial uses, and noise impacts associated with mechanical equipment, particularly close to current or planned residential uses.

At the most recent Plan Commission, staff presented on the types of centers. You can watch the video for  the presentation and public input here.

Additionally, the item will be making it's way through committees in preparation to come to Common Council in the new year. To find all of the information and to find out about future meetings you can visit this page.
