Affirming Unwavering Support for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Abuse + where to get help

posted

Hello,

While I cannot discuss specific individuals or allegations, I want to be sure to share with you that I stand firmly in support of survivors of domestic violence. Having grown up in a family where domestic violence was happening regularly I know firsthand how traumatic the impact of domestic violence is on individuals and families.

Speaking out about surviving domestic violence can be liberating. That is the opinion I recently shared with Madison365.

We all know how difficult it can be for individuals to seek help.  Survivors of domestic violence often feel isolated and alone and unsure of where to turn. This is was why I also began to work on a honoring resolution (with help from the Common Council Office staff) so that myself and other Alders can affirm our support for survivors of domestic violence.

This resolution was added to legistar yesterday.  I've asked Common Council Office staff to ask the Mayor and Alders to sign on in support (sponsors).  You can follow the resolution and check back periodically for updates on sponsors (Alders/Mayor) and any edits to the draft.

File 82834 -  Affirming Unwavering Support for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Abuse.

  • This honoring resolution will be presented at our next Common Council meeting on April 16th.
  • The agenda will be available later this week.
  • As with any honoring resolution you may register to support/oppose the item. You may also register to speak to the item. Once the agenda and meeting details are updated later this week you'll see the online form to register.  You may also send comments on agenda items to allalders@cityofmadison.com
