Update on Wheeler Road Traffic Calming

posted

After a lengthy discussion, the Transportation Commission approved all islands along Wheeler Road (from Comanche Way to N Sherman Ave) on Wednesday night, May 12.  The overall consensus at the Transportation Commission meeting and at our neighborhood meeting this past Monday (May 10) was that something needs to be done this year to address the high speeds.  Due to the feedback I have received regarding the island proposal, I have asked Traffic Engineering staff to modify the island designs as necessary to make sure all turning movements into and out of driveways are maintained.  I have also asked staff to shorten the islands to minimize the loss of on-street parking.  Staff have done that, and those design modifications are shown on the attached maps.

At a previous meeting, the Transportation Commission approved the three speed humps between Kennedy Road and School Road and the three speed humps between School Road and Delaware Boulevard.

In addition to the approved speed humps and islands, we have asked staff to perform an “All-Way Stop Study” for the Comanche Way & Wheeler Road intersection.  That study will include collecting turning movement counts and additional speed and traffic volume data on Wheeler Road.

For next steps, these designs will be approved at future Board of Public Works and Common Council meetings.  Construction will take place later this summer.  The construction process will be relatively quick as the speed humps and islands are saw-cut into the existing pavement, and two-way traffic will be maintained during construction.  I look forward to taking these steps to address this important issue.
