End of Year Progress Report: Achievements and Future Initiatives

posted

Greetings neighbors

The City of Madison 2024 budget has successfully passed, and I am thrilled to update you on the progress made in addressing the priorities you voiced for our district.

Warner Park Community & Recreation Center Expansion Project

The Warner Park Community Center Expansion project did not happen this year due to inflation in construction costs and the competitive bidding market for public works projects. I'm excited to say the proposed amendment increases funding for the Warner Park Community Recreation Center Expansion by $2,587,000 so that construction can begin around April 2024

Scholarships for Driver’s Education:
Your concerns about the rising costs of driver’s education have been addressed. The Finance Committee approved my request to allocate $10,000 to the Parks Division, providing 15 scholarships to students from low-income neighborhoods. This initiative aims to make safe driving instruction more accessible. Parental involvement will continue to be a requirement for program participation.

Cherokee Marsh Shelter & Amenities:
Exciting news! The Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park is slated for improvements, including a new shelter and additional amenities. Although this project didn't secure immediate approval, it has been added to the Horizon List. This signifies its importance for future discussions and considerations for the Capital Improvement Plan.

Warner Park Splash Pad:
While the Warner Park Splash Pad wasn't approved this time around, it has earned its place on the Horizon List. This acknowledgment emphasizes the community's desire for an accessible pool or splash pad in our district. Your support is crucial as we continue advocating for this project in the upcoming years.

Warner Park Lagoon Dredging

This project is to dredge Warner Park Lagoon, as part of the key recommendations from the Warner Lagoon Water Quality Planning Report, which will meet the primary goals of the Lagoon plan (maintain or improve recreational opportunities, improve water quality, improve and maintain habitat and increase educational opportunities). $80,000 in GO Borrowing from 2029 to 2025 to begin design and permitting for the project. The project was moved from 2029 to 2027 to fund work on the Warner Lagoon Dredging project

Community Safety Reminder:
As the weather cools down, a friendly reminder to avoid leaving your vehicles unlocked or unattended. This simple act can significantly contribute to preventing property crimes and ensuring the safety of our community. Also, remember to refrain from leaving unattended guns in cars.

Lastly, I want to thank my fellow council members for their invaluable support in advancing these initiatives. Every vote played a crucial role. Additionally, my sincere gratitude to the dedicated city staff for their tireless efforts in shaping and implementing these projects for the benefit of our city. Your commitment is truly appreciated. I look forward to further progress and discussions in the coming year!
