Streets Update : Recycling Fee Sticker Waiver Extended, Labor Day and Regular Collection Resumes

News from the Streets Division about an extension to the recycling fee sticker waiver, Labor Day schedule and the resumption of regular collection:

Recycling Fee Sticker Waiver Extended to Friday, September 7

The recycling fee sticker waiver for residents impacted by flood damage has been extended to Friday, September 7. 

Flood damaged items that require a recycling fee sticker will be collected from the curb without one. Residents can also deliver flood-damaged items that would require a sticker to the drop-off sites without obtaining one.

Recycling fee stickers will be required again for items that require one starting on Saturday, September 8.

Televisions

Televisions that have been flood-damaged should still be delivered to the drop-off sites.

Televisions contain hazardous material like lead and mercury. Placing televisions at the curb risks them being broken, and releasing their hazardous material into the storm drain system.

Computers & Electronics

Computers, and other electronics, should also still be delivered to a drop-off site for recycling.

Computers and other electronics can contain sensitive personal information. Placing these items at the curb risks someone other than city crews picking them up, and therefore potentially exposing residents to identity theft.

The Streets Division works with an electronics recycler that takes great care to destroy personal information on computers and other devices, meaning it is far safer for residents to bring computers and other electronics to a drop-off site or another reputable electronics recycler rather than placing them at the curb.

Drop-off Sites

The Streets Division drop-off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Ave.

The sites can only be used by City of Madison residents, and proof of residency is required to use the sites.

The sites are open 8:30am to 4:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The sites are open 8:30am to 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please note that the drop-off sites will be closed on Monday, September 3 in observance of Labor Day.

No Refuse, Recycling, or Large Item Collections on Labor Day

There will be no refuse, recycling, or large item collection on Monday, September 3 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.  The drop-off sites will also be closed on September 3. 

Madison residents who normally have their refuse and recycling collected on Mondays should instead place their carts to the curb for collection by 7am on Tuesday, September 4.  Only residents within the Monday district will have their collection of refuse and recycling delayed due to the holiday. 

Refuse and recycling for the Tuesday district will also be collected on September 4. 

Since the Streets Division will be collecting refuse and recycling from both the Monday and Tuesday districts on September 4, it is crucial that residents in these districts have their collection carts curbside prior to 7am on that day.  Due to the additional workload, Streets Division crews may not be able to return for carts set out late, and those residents who have set their carts out late may have to wait until their next scheduled collection day. 

Also, since Streets Division crews will be diverted from their normal tasks in order to collect refuse and recycling from the Monday and Tuesday districts on September 4, other services such as brush and large item collection may be temporarily delayed. 

The City of Madison drop-off sites will be open the following hours:

September 1, Saturday	8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
September 2, Sunday	8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
September 3, Monday	Closed
September 4, Tuesday	8:30am until 8:00pm

The drop-off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd. on the southwest side and 4602 Sycamore Ave. on the east side. The yard waste only site at 402 South Point Rd will also be open as noted above.

Regular Collection Schedule Resumes September 4

The Streets Division will resume the regular scheduled large item collection rotation during the week of September 4.

Large items, including flood-damaged items, will be collected during the scheduled large item day for neighborhoods when collections resume after the Labor Day holiday.

Residents can also contact the Streets Division office that services their home to have a collection schedule calendar mailed to them. Residents east of South Park St, which includes the isthmus, should call 608-246-4532.  Residents west of South Park St. should call 608-266-4681.
