- Removing Racial Covenants: This is a reminder. Racially restrictive deed covenants were common in District 19 for property developed as late as the 1960s. Dane County has organized a process to help property owners remove discriminatory racially restrictive covenants from their property. Learn more about this project at: https://danecountyplanning.com/Prejudice-in-Places. The County researched which properties have covenants on their property that prevent ownership or use based upon a person’s race. There is an interactive map to help you learn if your property has these restrictions and the County will help property owners navigate the process to remove these discriminatory covenants. They have also developed a traveling exhibit to tell the story. Learn more about this history and how you can help correct the resulting social injustice.
- Free Electronics Recycling: All electronics are accepted for free at the Streets Division drop-off sites from Madison residents. Televisions, computers, printers, cell phones, cords, and on and on. It’s all free. You just have to bring it to a drop-off site. Don’t put electronics in the carts.
- 2025 Recyclopedias Now Available: Paper copies of the 2025 Recyclopedia can be picked up at your local library location or requested to be mailed to your home by contacting the Streets Division.
- Protect Trees from Weed Killer: Recently, Urban Forestry published a release reminding people to be mindful about how they spray herbicides around trees. Urban Forestry has seen trees showing the telltale signs of damage from chemical sprays. When it comes to weed management, you can pull them. If you need to use chemical agents, you can choose granular ones that will not spray or mist onto the leaves of trees. And if you absolutely must use liquid weed killers, use them as directed. Also, if you are hiring lawn care professionals, make sure they are certified in the use of herbicides and using the material as directed so it is not overapplied.
- Free Mulch Now at Sycamore and South Point; No More Free Mulch at Olin Avenue: You can get small quantities of mulch for free from the South Point Rd drop-off site and from the Sycamore dog park parking lot area. Olin Avenue does not have free mulch for residents. It was moved due to a construction project at this location.
