A Generous Madison Is Coping with Food Insecurity

Growing Food Insecurity

News media of every variety is full of stories explaining why food insecurity is increasing nationwide. Madison and Dane County are not excluded as local stories emphasize. Whether or not SNAP benefits are sustained or curtailed, there are multiple factors causing increased demands on food pantries. The pantries and we residents are stepping up to sustain this vital safety net.

Dane County Food Pantry Network

Over forty food pantries work together as part of the Dane County Food Pantry Network. The link will take you to addresses and phone numbers for the Network members. Additional Network partners serve meals. Do you have neighbors or acquaintances that are struggling with food availability and costs? Please share this information. Despite the stories of struggling pantries, they are open and ready to welcome those who need assistance. Here are three pantries that are particularly convenient to District 19.

Pantries have different business models, and different days and hours of operation. It’s a good idea to call ahead or check online. The attached list is not exhaustive. Numerous places of worship, businesses, and individuals maintain “little pantries”, or food donation collection points.

How to Help

Our food pantries are there for the community because of the tremendous support we give them. As caring neighbors, we can donate food or funds. Most pantries depend on volunteers. Whether it’s an occasional Holiday contribution or weekly time unloading, stocking and serving, it all makes a difference. Volunteering as a business or place of worship is an opportunity for rewarding camaraderie.
