East High Homecoming Parade on Sept. 20 !

The East High School Homecoming Parade will be happening Friday, Sept 20th, at 5:45pm starting at the intersection of Dickenson and E. Mifflin (same as past years) and will travel down Mifflin to Breese Stevens Field before the 7pm game against Janesville Parker. The Purgolders would love to see families and community members join in the festivities!

Sept. 26 TLNA Steering Committee Meeting on Salvation Army Redevelopment Proposal

The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association has announced that the next TLNA steering committee meeting for the Salvation Army redevelopment proposal on the 600 block of E. Washington/E. Mifflin will be held Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6pm, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 944 E. Gorham Street. All are welcome to attend. Visit the TLNA Development website to stay up to speed. So far, these city committees are scheduled to consider the redevelopment:

• Urban Design Commission - Oct. 16
• Plan Commission - Oct. 28

Other committees, Common Council, and the Dane County Board will also consider any affordable housing fund awards that are proposed for the Low Income Housing Tax Credit apartment building that is part of the proposal.

Latest Flooding Update from the City

The weekly flooding updates from City Engineering can be found here. As mentioned there, and as you likely know, the risk of flooding is heightened due to recent rains, but the weather forecast for next week indicates lake levels are likely to drop some. The City and Dane County are currently considering budget allocations to implement some strategies for reducing future flooding on the isthmus, but the efficacy of and schedule for dredging of the Yahara River to increase water flow remains under study and is TBD.

Proposed F35 Deployment 

This week city staff released an analysis and more detailed maps of the draft Air Force F-35A Operational Beddown National Guard Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) pertaining to the 115 Fighter Wing at Truax Field.

As the Mayor notes on her blog, since this is not a City of Madison decision, city staff is not providing a recommendation for or against the proposed location of F-35s at Truax and they did not evaluate sections of EIS document pertaining to other communities or compare impacts of various locations. The intent of their document is to provide a clear and objective compilation of relevant facts from the EIS and a greater explanation of how this could impact Madison.

Public comments can be submitted via the Air National Guard's official public comment channels through Sept. 27th and can be made online or by mail. The link for public comments can be accessed here.

I remain concerned about the potential impacts of the F35s on the areas near Truax, as detailed in the draft EIS. I anticipate supporting a Common Council resolution that registers those concerns. You are more than welcome to contact me with your thoughts on the proposed stationing of F35s, but I strongly encourage you to contact our federal elected officials who are closer to the decision-making process.

Law Park Community Workshop on Sept. 18 at Central Library

Imagine fishing, biking, water sports and outdoor play along with arts, entertainment, and food while people and families gather and have fun in and around this downtown waterfront park! Come share and learn more about what Law Park can be. Share your ideas, community goals, and priorities for this lakeshore greenspace. Reminder: Final Sandbag Collection Opportunity Ends Sept. 22

The final opportunity for curbside sandbag collection began on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019. In order for residents to have their sandbags collected efficiently, residents must first visit the City of Madison Flooding website to find out if they live in the "Flood Zone" or "Request Pickup" areas. Those not in the Flood Zone will need to request sandbag pickup. Residents in the Flood Zone must get their bags to the curb or terrace prior to Sunday, September 22 to ensure collection. City Engineering Has a Podcast on Interesting Topics

City Engineering has launched a bimonthly podcast, "Everyday Engineering" that is a 15-20 minute audio clip where the Engineering Division's Public Information Officer Hannah Mohelnitzky hosts engineers to talk about infrastructure topics that impact the community. The latest podcast episode is "Salt: Great for French fries, not so great for fish fries" where Hannah hosts Engineer Phil Gaebler and Christal Campbell from Dane County Land & Water Resources Department, who is the Stormwater Education Coordinator, and is part of the Madison Area Municipal Stormwater Partnership. Gaebler and Campbell talk about why every resident should choose a professional who uses salt responsibility. Find salt certification classes and a list of certified applicators here.

She is a Madison native with a long history of community engagement and chronicling Madison's history, including publishing her own newspaper and producing her own television show. She is active with numerous organizations, including serving on the board of the Foundation for Black Women's Wellness. Ms. Banks succeeds Stuart Levitan.

Currently, once per week for an approximately 4-hour window of time parking is not allowed on most District 2 streets from Nov. 15 to March 15. Early next week I will post an alder update about these proposed changes.

NOTE: These were the original questions posed in the resolution creating the Task Force. In discussing these issues throughout the previous two years, the Task Force noted additional issues related to these issues as highlighted in the BCC Subcommittee Report submitted on March 12, 2019.

Decisions about recommendations raised in the BCC Subcommittee report will also be made at this and the next Task Force Meeting on September 25.
