Dec. 14 Fireworks Display Offshore of the Edgewater Hotel

 

On Saturday, Dec. 14, between 6:00pm and 6:30pm fireworks will be launched offshore of the Edgewater Hotel for a private event. The fireworks display is expected to last 10 to 12 minutes. The city allows these types of fireworks displays via application that includes a $250 City application fee, a $250 permit fee and application to the Fire Department, at least a $1 million liability insurance policy, and several other requirements.

 

Public Market Holiday

 

Dec. 14: Future Public Market Hosts Holiday Event

 

This holiday season, the Madison Public Market team is opening the doors of the future home in the Fleet Services Building for a special holiday event! Saturday, Dec. 14th they are hosting a festive holiday market from 11am – 3pm. Not only will you get a look inside the Market's future home, but you'll also have a chance to meet many local merchants, musicians and more.

This free event will feature holiday-themed performances, crafts for the little ones by Madison Public Library, and a special visit from our favorite sleigh-rider. Stop by to mingle with your Madison neighbors, stock up on last-minute gifts, and warm up with some of Madison's one-of-a-kind lunch and snack items for purchase. Madison Police Department Community Survey Deadline Dec. 15

 

MPD has launched a community survey and the deadline for participating is Dec. 15. MPD asks that you take a few minutes to complete the survey. In order for the City of Madison Police Department to improve their service(s) to the community, they need and value your feedback. One of MPD's core values is a commitment to continuous improvement and your insights will aid them as they consider ways in which they can modify or enhance our service model(s). Dec. 16 Steering Committee Meeting Continues Evaluation of 126 Langdon Street Proposal

 

The second steering committee meeting of neighbors evaluating Core Spaces' proposal for an apartment building at 126 Langdon St. will be held Monday, Dec. 16, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Kennedy Manor, 1 Langdon St. At this meeting, the development team will be presenting their latest concepts and taking input from the steering committee that was formed at their Dec. 2 meeting.

The proposed building includes 88 apartments with a total of 373 beds and 21 parking spaces, all contained in a 5-story building along Langdon with 7 stories in the rear. An outdoor swimming pool, hot tub, and deck is proposed atop the 5th floor building section. 

The developers presented their latest renderings and concepts at the Dec. 11 Urban Design Commission meeting. This was their second informational presentation to UDC with formal consideration by UDC and Plan Commission expected in February. The city staff report to UDC for the Dec. 11 meeting is here; a Madison.com article on the proposal is here, and an Isthmus article can be found here.

Understanding the Impacts of PFAS

The Madison Water Utility has published an informative discussion on the dangerous chemicals known as PFAS that are threatening our surface and ground water, as well as the environment in general. You can read it here: "We'll be doing this forever." Understanding the impact of PFAS.

While ice rinks and cross-country ski trails remain closed (except for a portion of the machine-made snow loop at Elver Park), we know winter fun will be here before we know it. You can find updates to all your favorites on our Winter Fun webpage. This is the best way to know if your favorite rink is open or trail is groomed.

Pet Licensing Helps All Animals: Public Health Urges Owners to License Their Pets

Public Health Madison & Dane County is reminding residents to purchase their annual pet licenses. The 2020 pet license year runs from January 1 to December 31. In Madison and in Dane County, it is the law that all dogs five months and older be licensed. In Madison and many cities and villages in Dane County, cats must also be licensed. To get a dog or cat license in Madison, visit the Public Health website. Dog owners who license their pet are able to purchase a dog park permit to enjoy the 17 off-leash dog parks in Madison and Dane County.

Note that the Parks Department continues to explore new policies related to having dogs in public parks. At this point, the most likely proposed change will be to allow dogs on leash in some or all city parks, but with restrictions near playgrounds and athletic fields. In District 2 dogs are currently allowed on leash on sidewalks/paths in James Madison Park, Burr Jones Park, and on the Yahara River Parkway, but are not allowed at all in Reynolds or Tenney Parks. I'll keep you posted on the proposed changes as they are percolate their way through the system eventually to appear on the Board of Park Commissioners agenda.

2019 Property Tax Bills

The City of Madison Treasurer's Office is now accepting 2019 property tax payments. 2019 property tax bills have been mailed and are now available online here.

As mentioned on the Treasurer's Office tax payment website, there are several methods of payment. With Enrolled Payments you may pay online using your checking/savings account. Another option is payment by phone. Property owners are also able to make a onetime payment by credit or debit card or accessing a checking or savings account. There is a fee for using a credit or debit card but none for using a checking or savings account. Residents are able to submit their payments by mail.

All tax payments postmarked on or before December 31, 2019 will be processed as having been paid in 2019.

Dec. 23 and 24 Lane Closure on 1000 Block of E. Mifflin St.

On Monday 12/23 and Tuesday 12/24, CG Schmidt and Dawes Crane will be erecting a tower crane on the Lyric II construction site in the 1000 blocks of E. Mifflin Street and E. Washington. For these 2 days they plan to close the 1000 block of E. Mifflin to through vehicle traffic for the crane installation but leave a 10' wide lane on the north side of the street to maintain two-way bike traffic. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the north side of the street. Once the crane is erected, bike and car traffic should return to its current state.

Jan. 6 Informational Meeting on Liquor License Application at Dark Horse

Please join me and the owners of Dark Horse for a meeting where we will hear about their application for a Class B Beer & Liquor license. The proposed license will be at their new restaurant at 10 N. Livingston (formerly Sujeo). Patrick DePula of Salvatore's Tomato Pies is proposing Dark Horse as a full-service restaurant. The projected hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11am until 2pm and 4:30 to 10pm; Friday and Saturday 11am to 2pm and 4:30pm until 12am, and Sunday from 4 to 9pm. Dark Horse may also ask for extended hours on evenings when there are concerts at the Sylvee. At the informational meeting you will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, see their facilities, and learn about their business.
