1. DISTRICT 2 UPDATES

 

 

 

• Street Closures--Ironman Triathlon - Impacting District 2 on Sunday: The 500 and 600 blocks of State Street will be closed for the run portion of the triathlon with other impacts nearby. See all routes here.

Meeting for Downtown Stakeholders on State St-Campus Parking Garage

City staff is hosting a virtual State Street Campus Garage Virtual Public Information Meeting, on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4:00pm for those who want to learn more, particularly for those who work and live or own property near the proposed redevelopment of the State Street-Campus Parking Garage at 415 N. Lake Street. Registration for the Sept. 14 meeting is required, available here.

On Sept. 7, the Urban Design Commission received an informational presentation on the proposed redevelopment. Note that UDC's consideration is limited mostly to the exterior design of the proposed structure. There won't be a formal UDC consideration of the proposal until later this fall after the land use applications are filed with the city. A recording of the UDC meeting is available here with that agenda item starting at about 1:17:00 into the meeting. UDC seemed generally supportive of the proposal design, with some questions about materials, the outdoor amenity spaces, the protruding apartment balconies along Lake Street in front of the parking structure, general concerns about effective street activation along Lake Street, and questions about the bus traffic and pedestrian safety along Hawthorne Court.

The Campus Area Neighborhood Association has formed a neighborhood steering committee to further evaluate the proposal. All are welcome to participate in that process and CANA suggests signing up via this form. Getting on the committee's email list via that form is a great way to stay informed about the project even if you can't attend all of the meetings.

Eventually various approvals will be needed from the UDC, the Landmarks Commission, the Finance Committee, Plan Commission, and Common Council. Still to be determined are levels of affordability for some of the beds in this proposed student housing development.

 

Recap of Sept. 8 Neighborhood Meeting for Redevelopment Proposal for 668 State St.

On Sept. 8 a virtual neighborhood meeting was held to take a first look at a proposed redevelopment of 668 State Street. A recording of that meeting can be found here. Attendees' questions and input primarily focused on the likely lack of below-market rents with other questions concerning the building's management/security plan, rooftop amenity space, and materials.

The property owner, 668 State LLC, is seeking approvals to construct a four-story addition atop the existing two-story commercial building at 668 State Street. The proposed addition will contain 24 student-oriented apartments on floors 3-6 with floors 5 and 6 set back approximately 30' from the front façade. The existing commercial space on the two lower floors and in a finished basement will largely remain. No automobile parking is proposed; parking for 24 bicycles will be provided inside the building with 2 additional outdoor bicycle stalls.

This proposal was submitted in 2017 and was fully approved, but the project did not move forward at that time. The property owner is submitting the same project as was approved in 2017. They anticipate submitting their city applications in September. The project will require approvals from the Urban Design Commission and Plan Commission.

The Campus Area Neighborhood Association is forming a neighborhood steering committee to further evaluate the proposal. To sign up for that committee, please complete this google form.
