District 2, District 6, Redistricting, and My Future

posted

As most of you know, the city's redistricting effort that took place as a result of the 2020 US Census included a shift in the area covered by District 2. Since that shift that took effect on Jan. 1, 2022, I have resided in District 6, but legally am able to represent District 2, the district in which I was elected, up until the 2023 Spring Election.

Winning candidates in the 2023 Spring Election will need to live in the district they would represent by the time they are seated for a 2-year term on April 18, 2023. I do not plan to move to District 2, so there will be a new District 2 Alder after the Spring Election.

If you are interested in learning about being an alder or have ideas about others who might be want to know more, please reach out (district2@cityofmadison.com). While being an alder can be a big job, including helping constituents navigate city government and crafting policies that will inform the future of D2 and Madison, it is very satisfying and exciting. I encourage those who are curious to contact me; I am more than happy to help all prospective candidates.

Back to District 6 in which I live and in which I could run for election. My current thoughts on running in D6 (which is generally the Tenney-Lapham and Marquette Neighborhoods) in the Spring Election are muddled, but I will admit that I lean towards stepping aside and letting new folks come forth. I will make that final decision shortly, but regardless of my plans, I also encourage anyone interested in running in District 6 to contact me. Again, I'm more than happy to give anyone an idea of what being an alder entails no matter your district and whether you are considering the Spring 2023 election or otherwise.

One unrelated thought; if you are not registered to vote for the Nov. 8 Election, please do so and be sure to make a plan for how and when you will vote. Every vote is needed now, more than ever.
