District 2 Updates and Meetings of Interest

City meetings continue to be mostly virtual with details listed in City Meetings of Interest below. Common Council meetings are hybrid so the public can attend in person or via Zoom. Stay in touch with your neighbors through either Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc.  or Campus Area Neighborhood Assoc .

New Alder, Who This?

Hello District 2 and friends,
This is Juliana Bennett, your new District 2 Alder! First off, thank you. Thank you residents, colleagues, family, and friends. Thank you for electing me to this position. Thank you for supporting me the past few months. I am so excited and honored to begin to work with downtown and the greater Madison community. Please view a short introduction to myself and the new cohort of alders.

This year I was appointed to the Transportation Commission, Madison Food Policy Council, Downtown Coordinating Committee, and the Madison BID. Frankly, I am happy with my committee appointments. Last term I had a heavy committee load, which didn’t allow me the flexibility to attend other committee meetings and events in Madison. So, I am thankful to now have the flexibility with my committee load. 

As stated throughout the campaign, my priorities this term are affordable housing, equitable transportation, and violence prevention. If you’d like to connect about these issues or any other issue that is important to you, please email me district2@cityofmadison.com. 

Downtown Updates

Safe Streets Program: April 26th the Transportation Commission will discuss upcoming projects to promote safe streets. Please email me district2@cityofmadison.com with recommendations of street safety needs in your area.

Dane Core 2.0 Program Application Closes May 31st:Dane Core 2.0 funding is running out! Unfortunately, the application will close May 31st and applications will be processed through August. If you or someone you know is in need of emergency rental assistance, please apply!

Save the Date, Madison Night Market: The Madison Night Market is coming back! The dates are May 11, June 8, August 10, September 14, and October 19. 

41st Annual Crazylegs Classic: The event will take place April 29th at 9:50a. Please keep in mind of additional traffic and activity downtown during the event.

THIS WEEK

Manifestación Denim!, Wednesday, April 26, 2023: Join UNIDOS Against Domestic Violence on International Denim Day for food, drink, music and an art show. Unveiling of denim quilt made by Survivors at 6pm.

Schools Make Madison Summit, Thursday, April 27, 2023: Join the Madison Public Schools Foundation for a morning focused on creating systems of support and opportunity for our MMSD students. You will hear from educators, and business and community leaders on the significance of K12 public schools to our community and regional economy, and from current Adopt-a-School partners about the difference they’re making through their involvement with our schools and students. You will leave with a better understanding of how you can become a partner for progress in our schools.

MMSD Community Engagement Session - State of Black Students, Saturday, April 29, 2023: The MMSD community is invited to attend a community engagement session on April 29, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Madison College South Campus. Attendees will meet with MMSD’s superintendent, Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins and other educational experts. The goal will be to provide input and create strategies to support the educational success of Black Children in MMSD.

Wealth Literacy Conference – Saturday, April 29, 2023, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM: This year’s inaugural one day Wealth Literacy Conference (WLC) focuses on three critical pillars; mindset, action planning, and community. Each one of these pillars plays an intricate role in providing individuals the opportunity to build wealth.

Stormwater, Parks, Land Use and more at West Area Open House on May 10! The West Area Plan team will host an Open House on May 10 at Lussier Community Education Center from 6:30-8:00 p.m. 55 S. Gammon Road. City agencies will give short presentations on projects spanning land use planning, transportation, stormwater management, water quality protection, parks and open space and more. Residents will also have the chance to talk with staff to learn more including how these projects may affect them and how they can be involved. Dane County Farmers' Market - Wednesday Market: The Wednesday Dane County Farmers’ Market is located on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, in between the Madison Municipal Building and the City County Building. While more intimate than the Saturday Market, you will still find many of your favorite Dane County Farmers’ Market members, as well as a full array of fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheeses, honey, maple syrup, bakery items, cut flowers, plants, and many specialty items.

East Side Farmers' Market, Tuesday, April 25, 2023: The Eastside Farmers' Market is Madison Wisconsin’s finest weekday farmers' market. Our goal is to bring the freshest Wisconsin grown food direct to the heart of the East side. Our vendor members are agricultural producers and food artisans who make value added products from Wisconsin's agricultural bounty.

Annual Spring Break-A-Way 3on3 Basketball Tournament Series | April 28: After March Madness, the real tournament begins with the Annual Spring Break-A-Way 3on3 Basketball Tournament Series. Northside teens compete in a double-elimination tournament while enjoying a free meal. With on-site registration, players simply have to show up with two friends, or we will find a team for drop-in players. The tournament series is held on Friday nights: April 28, May 19 & May 26 (5pm-8pm), and includes middle school and high school divisions. Please stay home if you feel sick.

HUD-Approved Homebuyer Education Class (2-Part Class)(April 22 and 29): This class is offered virtually and in person as a two part series. If you need help registering email cmonsivais@lacasadeesperanza.org.Your Path to Homeownership is provided by La Casa de Esperanza, a Non-Profit HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency dedicated to assisting individuals and families to increase income, build savings and gain assets. Our focus on financial wellness is supported by the Center’s programs and services which include; home buyer education and counseling, free tax services, employment coaching, financial coaching and access to financial workshops. Our people-centered approach supports our belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to work on their financial wellness.

Prescribed Burn Crew Member Volunteer Training, Saturday, April 29, 2023: Join Conservation Resource Supervisor, and DNR-certified Burn Boss, Paul Quinlan for a Burn Crew Member Volunteer Training. Meet Paul and team at Elver Park, behind the main shelter to learn basic fire management as an ecological tool in prairie or mixed hardwood forest, as well as safety during prescribed burns. You'll also learn the laws and rules Law and rules, proper burning conditions and basic fire methods. 

Inspired by Wright: A Hands-on FLW Tour, Saturday, April 29: Join us for this hands-on Frank Lloyd Wright Tour demonstrating how Wright saw geometric shapes as underlying forms of nature and applied them to almost all his work. As you tour the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, you’ll learn how this unique site influenced Wright’s choice of geometry, which is expressed in nearly every aspect of the building and grounds.

2023 Dream BIG Gala-Big Brother Big Sisters of Dane County - Friday, July 28th: The Dream BIG Gala, presented by The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, serves as their largest annual fundraiser and is crucial in powering our work to create more mentoring experiences for youth in Dane County.

22nd Annual Juneteenth Parade: Kujichagulia – Madison Center for Self Determination, the home of the Juneteenth Day Celebration, invites you to join in on the celebration of freedom and heritage by participating in the Annual Juneteenth Day Parade. Juneteenth is a historical event and now, a national holiday, which provides an opportunity to highlight the contributions of the Black American to our great nation. It is also an opportunity to unite our community in a positive as well as festive celebration of our rich culture through dance, music, storytelling, drama, and other visual presentations. We will be commemorating the 158th year of the Juneteenth Day Celebration in the United States on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Penn Park in South Madison. Approving plans and specifications and authorizing the Board of Public Works to advertise and receive bids for 2023 Parking Garage Maintenance. ( 2nd, 4th and 6th ADs)

• The two parking garages to receive bids are the State St Campus Garage - Lake and Frances, and Buckeye Lot. 

Agenda Item 13
Providing Urban Community Arts Network, Ltd. (UCAN) a $30,000 grant for a “MadLit” program on the 100 Block of State Street using Small Business Equity and Recovery Program (SBER) funds and authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to sign an agreement with UCAN for that purpose. (4th AD)

A Resolution authorizing the Mayor and the City Clerk to execute a non-competitive on-call service contract with EOTO, LLC for Community Outreach Services.

• The purpose of the $193,440 funds is to provide community outreach services during the transition with Metro Network Redesign, Bus Rapid Transit, and Fare System Upgrade. 

Agenda Item 24
Authorizing the City of Madison Fire Department to accept up to $12,000 in donations for a 50th anniversary recognition event for paramedic service in the City of Madison and amending the Madison Fire Department’s 2023 adopted operating budget to include the $12,000 as agency revenue and increasing supplies expense authority by the same amount.Agenda Item 25Amending portions of Section 9.23 of the Madison General Ordinances relating to regulation of mobile home parks. (Recommended Action: Refer to the May Landlord Tenant Issues Committee)

• The purpose of this ordinance change is to help mobile homeowners have time before moving instead of having to move within a short time frame.

Amending the 2023 Adopted Mayor’s Office Sustainability Improvements Project Capital Budget to accept a $429,746 grant award from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA); authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to execute the associated grant agreement with U.S. EPA; and authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk enter into a non-competitive contracts with Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness, Inc., Latino Health Council, The Hmong Institute, Inc., and the University of Wisconsin-Madison to implement the Building Sensor and Community Partnership Networks for Air Quality project.
